Review of the Address Supporting Organisation (ASO)

Background

As set forth in Article VIII of the Bylaws, the Address Supporting Organization (“ASO”) advises the ICANN Board with respect to policy issues relating to the operation, assignment, and management of Internet addresses. The ASO was established by a Memorandum of Understanding entered into on 21 October 2004 between ICANN and the Number Resource Organization (NRO), an organization of the existing regional Internet registries (RIRs).

For more information about the ASO, see http://aso.icann.org/.

Update

The Review is expected to be launched in December 2008.

Next Steps

Staff will seek ASO input on developing draft Terms of Reference (TOR). The Board Governance Committee will consider the draft TOR. It will then forward them to the Board for concurrence and, if approved, posting for public comment. This step will be followed by publication of the final TOR and the Request for Proposals for an independent reviewer.
